Marine Licenses: All sea life along the coast of KwaZulu Natal, including the South Coast, is protected, and permits are required for fishing (surf and deep sea) or for removing crayfish, mussels, octopus, oysters, sea lice and mudprawns. Permits are obtained from any post office, or from the KZN Nature Conservation Service offices at the Mpenjati Nature Reserve and the Shelley Beach Ski Boat Club.
Shelly Beach annual Tuna Bonanza Fishing Competition. The Shelly Beach Ski Boat Festival is a annual event since the inaugural Ski-Boat “Bonanza” held in 2001. The event coincide with the winter June/July school holidays and also the annual Sardine Run and is one of the country’s premier winter gamefish competitions in terms of total prize value. It has evolved to one of the major holiday events on the South Coast. The past few years have seen battles between a yellowfin tuna, king mackerel or amberjack for heaviest common targeted species.
